Mount Semeru, located in East Java, showed an increase in volcanic activity again on Wednesday (1/7/2026). Throughout the day, Java's highest peak was recorded experiencing four eruptions with varying ash column heights.
Data from the Mount Semeru Observation Post recorded the first eruption taking place in the early morning at 00:52 WIB, reaching an ash column height of 700 meters. Activity continued until 08:14 WIB with an 800-meter ash column spreading toward the east and southeast. The peak of the volcanic activity occurred at 09:24 WIB and 10:10 WIB, when ash columns were observed reaching up to 1 kilometer above the 3,676-meter peak.
Responding to this series of eruptions, the Chief Executive of Lumajang BPBD, Isnugroho, emphasized that Mount Semeru's alert level remains at Level III (Standby). The public is urged not to carry out any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the main crater to avoid the risk of incandescent rock fall.
Furthermore, local authorities have forbidden residents from conducting activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. Additionally, residents are asked to stay away from riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat to anticipate potential threats of pyroclastic flows and cold lava flows.
