Mount Merapi has once again shown increased volcanic activity by launching pyroclastic flows twice on Monday, July 6, 2026. The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) reported that the first flow was observed at 08:28 WIB, traveling a distance of 1.7 kilometers toward the Krasak River.
A few minutes later, specifically at 08:41 WIB, another pyroclastic flow occurred, traveling a greater distance of 2 kilometers toward the Putih River. Head of BPPTKG, Agus Budi Santoso, detailed that the second flow had a stronger intensity with a maximum amplitude of 121.54 mm and a duration of 124.88 seconds.
Based on current monitoring data, the magma supply within the volcano's interior is ongoing, which could potentially trigger further lava avalanches or pyroclastic flows. BPPTKG has set a danger radius in the south-southwest sector, covering the Boyong River up to 5 km, and the Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng Rivers up to 7 km. Meanwhile, the southeast sector covers the Woro River up to 3 km and the Gendol River up to 5 km.
The public is requested to comply with authority recommendations by refraining from any activities within the designated danger zone. In addition to the threat of pyroclastic flows, residents living on the mountain's slopes are urged to remain vigilant against potential lahar floods, especially during rainfall, and to anticipate the impacts of volcanic ash in the event of an explosive eruption.
