Discourse regarding the potential fusion or merger between the Gerindra Party and the NasDem Party is currently under intense scrutiny among national political observers. Arifki Chaniago, Executive Director of Aljabar Strategic Indonesia, assesses that the step to integrate these two major entities is not merely about consolidating power, but also has the potential to create new uncertainties in Indonesia's power configuration.
Arifki highlighted the historical background of the leaders of both parties, namely Prabowo Subianto and Surya Paloh, who both have historical roots in the Golkar Party. According to him, past experience in dealing with intense internal factional dynamics in their previous party serves as an important note. If these two entities are forced to merge, it is not impossible that internal conflicts will re-emerge, which could ultimately affect the party's future strategic decision-making.
Furthermore, he highlighted the dilemma faced by the NasDem Party. As a party that has so far championed the issues of change and progressivism, joining a larger power bloc could obscure the party's original character. This condition is considered capable of limiting NasDem's room for maneuver, especially if they wish to again sponsor an alternative figure like Anies Baswedan in the upcoming 2029 Presidential Election.
On the other hand, a different response came from within the NasDem Party. Chairman of the NasDem Party Central Executive Board (DPP), Willy Aditya, firmly denied the existence of merger discourse. He explained that the idea put forward by Surya Paloh was not a merger, but rather the formation of a 'political block'. This concept is offered as an effort to ensure inter-party cooperation in supporting government policies runs more harmoniously, substantially, and without getting trapped in transactional relationship patterns.
