Digital transformation in Indonesia is now entering a crucial phase, where the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) has shifted from mere experimentation to the operational level. Massive cloud infrastructure support, particularly in the manufacturing sector through the Making Indonesia 4.0 initiative, is driving companies to integrate their operational systems more deeply. However, this integration brings new challenges in an increasingly complex cybersecurity landscape.
The issue arises because AI does not work in a vacuum. This technology relies on a broad ecosystem encompassing various cloud platforms, applications, data pipelines, and machine identities that often escape the security team's oversight. For large corporations managing hybrid systems between legacy infrastructure, private clouds, and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings, every new connection created opens up risk gaps that must be mitigated.
Steve Goudreault, Cloud Security Evangelist at Gigamon, emphasized that storing data in local or sovereign cloud environments does not automatically guarantee full control. Companies often suffer from visibility gaps, where they cannot accurately trace data access paths or inter-system communication patterns. This limitation poses a real business risk, especially considering BSSN data recorded more than 609 million cyberattacks in Indonesia throughout 2024.
Many organizations fall into the trap of excessively adding security tools without an accompanying increase in detection clarity. Research shows that even when companies manage up to 15 security tools simultaneously, the majority of IT teams still find it difficult to respond to incidents effectively. Furthermore, poor data quality often acts as a major roadblock to the effectiveness of AI-based security systems.
A long-term solution currently being adopted by business leaders across the Asia-Pacific region is the utilization of automation and deeper network telemetry. Armed with high-quality data, AI can actually be optimized to process massive data volumes, detect anomalies in real-time, and strengthen compliance with regulations such as the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP).
Ultimately, cloud visibility is no longer just a technical responsibility, but a core component of corporate accountability at the board level. Organizations capable of demonstrating effective security controls amidst dynamic AI adoption will gain a competitive advantage in preserving customer trust and ensuring future business continuity.
