The implementation of nuclear medicine technology in Indonesia is starting to bring a breath of fresh air to the national medical world. Through the use of radiopharmaceuticals, doctors are now able to detect traces of cellular biological activity before physical symptoms appear, a significant leap from conventional diagnostic methods that only focus on organ structure.

This transformation is becoming increasingly urgent given the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer. According to Global Cancer Observatory data from 2022, there were more than 400,000 new cancer cases in Indonesia. The use of nuclear technology enables more predictive and precise treatment, directly contributing to increased patient recovery rates.

Despite its great potential, accessibility to this service remains a primary challenge. Currently, nuclear medicine services are only available in ten provinces. This limitation is influenced by the characteristics of radioisotopes, which have short half-lives, demanding high precision in the production, logistics, and distribution chain so they can be immediately utilized at the destination hospitals.

On the other hand, Indonesia has a strategic advantage through the existence of three research reactors managed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). These facilities in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Serpong play a vital role in independently producing medical radioisotopes, which simultaneously reduces dependence on global supply chains.

The Indonesian government is now accelerating steps through strategic collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The focus of the 2023-2027 roadmap includes expanding facilities to regional areas, strengthening human resource capacity, and ensuring service quality. Synergy across sectors, from research to distribution, is expected to build a more inclusive and resilient healthcare system in the future.
