Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait, has once again shown a significant increase in volcanic activity. During the observation period on Tuesday (7/7/2026), from 12:00 to 18:00 WIB, the volcano was observed emitting thick black crater smoke, accompanied by varying seismic activity.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) explained in its report that the height of the smoke column reached between 10 to 200 meters above the crater peak. The observed color of the smoke also varied, ranging from white, gray, to black with fluctuating intensity, from thin to thick.
In addition to visual smoke, monitoring instruments recorded quite active seismic activity, including 9 gust earthquakes, 12 harmonic tremor earthquakes, and one hybrid earthquake. Continuous tremor (microtremor) with a dominant amplitude of 1 millimeter is also still being recorded, indicating that magma dynamics within the volcano are still ongoing.
Although activity is observed to be increasing, the status of Mount Anak Krakatau is currently still set at Level III (Alert). As a precautionary measure for the safety of residents and tourists, PVMBG issued a strict recommendation that no one approach the active crater area within a 3-kilometer radius.
