Mount Semeru, located in East Java, has once again shown volcanic activity with an eruption on Monday (13/7/2026) evening at 18:23 WIB. According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, this eruption adds to a long series of eruptions occurring in the past week, totaling nine times.
Until this report was filed, the visual of the eruption could not be observed directly due to certain conditions, but the eruption is confirmed to be ongoing. Based on seismic monitoring conducted between 12:00 and 18:00 WIB on the same day, 13 eruption earthquakes were recorded with amplitudes ranging from 10 to 22 millimeters and durations of 62 to 137 seconds. In addition, avalanche earthquakes and gust earthquakes were also detected around the peak area.
Responding to this situation, the PVMBG has set Mount Semeru's status to Level III (Alert). Residents and tourists are strictly prohibited from conducting activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. Authorities also emphasized a ban on activities within 500 meters of the riverbeds along Besuk Kobokan, given the threat of expanding pyroclastic flows and lahar flows that could reach up to 17 kilometers.
Data from MAGMA Indonesia notes that Mount Semeru has become the most active volcano in Indonesia throughout 2026. Out of a total of 3,155 volcanic eruptions recorded across Indonesia from the beginning of the year until July 13, 2026, Mount Semeru contributed the most dominantly with 1,394 recorded eruptions.
