The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Malang Regency is currently finalizing a contingency plan as a precautionary measure against a potential eruption of Mount Kelud. Through cross-sectoral collaboration involving the local government, security forces, and community elements, BPBD seeks to ensure that every party understands their respective roles and functions during an emergency.
This series of mitigation efforts was realized through a command post simulation at the BPBD Mako in Kepanjen in early July, which will be followed by a field simulation in the Selorejo area, Ngantang District. The Chief Executive of Malang Regency BPBD, Purwoto, emphasized that precise coordination is the main key to successful disaster management, which cannot be carried out independently.
The program includes three systematic stages, starting from drafting operational plans through table-top discussions, testing communication flows in command post simulations, to real-life evacuation simulations of vulnerable groups in the field. The main focus of the evacuation is directed at pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and children to minimize the risk of casualties.
This preventive step reflects on the dark memories of the 2014 Mount Kelud eruption, which paralyzed the West Malang region, including Pujon, Ngantang, and Kasembon districts. This experience has prompted the local government to strengthen the readiness of facilities, infrastructure, and logistics so as not to be overwhelmed when facing similar situations in the future.
Although the status of Mount Kelud is currently monitored as calm, Purwoto emphasized the importance of vigilance without getting caught up in speculation. In accordance with disaster regulations, BPBD is given full authority as the post commander to bypass bureaucratic red tape in emergency conditions, allowing for the rapid and agile mobilization of personnel and supporting equipment.
