Serious challenges loom over Indonesia alongside the increasing political polarization and social fragmentation that are becoming ever more evident. This condition is deemed to risk hindering the effectiveness of governance and eroding the social cohesion that serves as the foundation of the nation's strength.
The warning was delivered by political observer Boni Hargens during the National Unity Dialogue forum hosted by the Indonesia Millennials Center (IMC) in Jakarta on Monday (22/6/2026). According to Boni, national unity is no longer a mere discourse, but an urgent necessity to maintain stability amidst increasingly uncertain political dynamics.
Boni stressed that while differing views are natural in a democracy, sharp and prolonged polarization actually poses a threat to the nation's solidarity. He urged the government to build a healthier space for dialogue, where public criticism is received as a constructive democratic mechanism rather than a burden.
On the other hand, government communication was also highlighted as a crucial element. Boni assessed that improvements in communication strategy are needed so that the good intentions of government policies can be correctly conveyed to the public, preventing misunderstandings at the community level.
Regarding policy implementation, Boni also highlighted the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program, which is a government priority. Although the program is seen as having good intentions for human resource development, he emphasized the importance of transparency. In this regard, Boni appreciated the decisive actions taken by law enforcement agencies against individuals misusing the program.
Echoing Boni's sentiments, IMC Director Yerikho Menurung emphasized that national unity is an absolute prerequisite for improving clean governance. He called on all elements of the nation to return to the spirit of the third principle of Pancasila to face increasingly complex economic and political challenges ahead.
