The National Energy Council (DEN) expressed its support for the implementation of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology as a strategic solution to accelerate the decarbonization agenda in the power generation sector. This move is seen as an effective middle ground for Indonesia to curb carbon emissions without having to early retire coal-fired power plants (PLTU).
DEN member Satya Widya Yudha emphasized that the use of SCR technology at the Jawa 9-10 power plant in Suralaya, Banten, managed by PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT), has demonstrated impressive performance. Based on an in-depth study conducted by DEN, the facility has proven capable of suppressing Sulfur Oxide (SOx) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions to levels lower than gas-fired power plants.
Satya assessed that the success of the Jawa 9-10 power plant in integrating *Ultra Supercritical* (USC) and SCR technologies can serve as a blueprint or benchmark for other coal-fired power plants in the country. The implementation of this technology is viewed as a realistic alternative for fulfilling energy transition commitments without compromising national electricity supply security.
Furthermore, Satya highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between decarbonization targets and energy security (*energy security*). The government has chosen to optimize the use of abundant fossil fuel resources supported by the latest technology, aiming to avoid the risk of energy crises that affected several countries after hastily stopping coal power plant operations.
By prioritizing technological innovations such as SCR, Indonesia is projected to maintain domestic electricity supply stability while continuously advancing sustainable carbon emission reduction efforts, without burdening the industry with early retirement policies for fossil fuel-based power plants.
