The wait for fans of Disney's ocean adventure story will soon be over. Walt Disney Studios has officially set July 10, 2026, as the release date for the live-action adaptation of the popular animated film, Moana. This ambitious project is set to deliver a unique cinematic experience through realistic visual effects that will bring audience members back to the beauty of Motunui island.
In this adaptation, young actress Catherine Laga'aia has been cast to portray the brave character of Moana. She will star alongside Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who returns to bring the demigod Maui to life in live action. Johnson's involvement adds a new dimension to the iconic character he previously voiced in the 2016 animated version.
The director's chair has been entrusted to Thomas Kail, an Emmy and Tony Award-winning filmmaker best known for the success of the musical Hamilton. To ensure Polynesian cultural authenticity and captivating musical quality, Disney has also brought on Lin-Manuel Miranda as a producer, alongside Auli'i Cravalho—the original voice of Moana—who serves as an executive producer.
In addition to the main cast, the film will bring back fan-favorite supporting characters, including Gramma Tala and the iconic animal duo, Heihei and Pua. The use of photorealistic CGI technology is expected to enhance the visuals of magical elements like the creator goddess, Te Fiti, providing an immersive experience for audiences worldwide when it hits the big screen.
