The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) launched a strategic breakthrough in an effort to accelerate downstreaming in the plantation sector by introducing advanced bioreactor technology. This innovation is designed to process crude palm oil (CPO) into B100 biodiesel or pure biofuel, which is expected to strengthen national energy independence while reducing dependence on fuel imports.
This technology was showcased for the first time through the Plantation Downstreaming Warehouse at the XVII National Farmers and Fishermen Week (PENAS) in Gorontalo at the end of last June. The development of the bioreactor is the result of a collaboration between the Agency for Agricultural Assembly and Modernization (BRMP) along with the Directorate General of Plantations and the Directorate General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities as an answer to the need for appropriate technology at the farmer level.
The Head of BRMP, Fadjry Djufry, emphasized that agricultural modernization today has transformed beyond merely chasing productivity figures. The government's focus is now on creating economic added value for plantation commodities, so that farmers no longer just sell raw materials, but highly competitive processed products. This step is projected to improve the welfare of farming and fishing communities in a sustainable manner.
The government aims for the implementation of this technology to not be limited to research scale, but to be widely adopted by cooperatives and business actors in various regions. In addition to biodiesel, the exhibition also showcased various other palm oil derivative products, such as Red Cooking Oil and environmentally friendly Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) production technology, as part of a strategy to strengthen national food security and prevent stunting through vitamin-rich intake.
Through this step, the Ministry of Agriculture seeks to build a more self-reliant renewable energy ecosystem. By utilizing domestic resources, this technology becomes a crucial instrument in supporting the government's energy transition, which is currently moving gradually from the implementation of the B35 and B40 biodiesel programs toward the ambitious target of B100 in the future.
