Efforts to boost the productivity of the fisheries sector in coastal areas have received an innovative push through a collaboration between Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and IPB University. A community service team from both universities introduced portable fish aggregating device (FAD) technology specifically designed to meet the needs of fishermen in Kabetan Village, Toli-Toli Regency, Central Sulawesi.

Until now, the majority of local fishermen still relied on simple fishing gear in shallow waters that only targeted reef fish with limited economic value. The sound attractor-based portable FAD innovation serves as a solution to attract pelagic fish—which have a higher market value—making them more accessible to local fishermen at depths of up to 30 meters.

The program, led by Dr. Ir. Sri Raharno from FTMD ITB, goes beyond providing physical assistance. A total of six portable FAD units, net packages, and fishing tackle were handed over to fishermen alongside a series of technical training sessions. This assistance focuses on enabling fishermen to independently operate, care for, and maintain the equipment over the long term.

In addition to addressing the fisheries aspect, the community service team integrated renewable energy utilization by installing solar-powered street lights in coastal areas. This facility is aimed at enhancing safety aspects and providing better lighting access for community activities at night.

This strategic move is expected to act as a catalyst for improving the welfare of coastal communities while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The successful implementation in Kabetan Village is projected to become a pilot model that can be replicated in various other coastal regions across Indonesia facing similar challenges in optimizing marine resources.
