Mount Karangetang, located on Siau Island, North Sulawesi, showed significant volcanic activity again on Sunday (12/7/2026) night. An explosive eruption was reported to have occurred around 19:14 WITA, triggering the ejection of incandescent material from the mountain's main crater.
According to statements from relevant authorities, the ejection of incandescent material briefly triggered a fire in the reed vegetation around the crater summit. This phenomenon caused a reflection of light toward the clouds, giving the visual impression of a fairly large flame. Based on technical monitoring, the direction of this eruption was identified toward the northern sector.
Although volcanic activity appears intense, officials assured that the ejection of incandescent material is estimated not to reach residential areas. Currently, field teams are conducting close monitoring to anticipate the potential emergence of incandescent lava flows that could endanger the areas below.
As of now, the status of Mount Karangetang remains at Level II or Alert. The public is advised to remain calm yet vigilant, and must comply with all safety recommendations issued by authorities to minimize risks from the volcanic activity.
