A new breakthrough in herbal pharmacy has been achieved by academics at Universitas Airlangga (Unair). Prof. Dr. Idha Kusumawati, S.Si., M.Si., developed a formulation method for turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) into an injectable preparation specifically designed for pharmacopuncture therapy, or injection into acupuncture points. This innovation addresses the low solubility of curcumin in water, which previously limited the effectiveness of turmeric as an injectable drug.
To overcome solubility issues, Prof. Idha utilized spray drying technology by mixing turmeric extract with lactose. This process converts liquid extract into fine powder with very high water solubility. As a result, the obtained solution is much clearer and homogeneous, making it ideal for direct application into patient body tissues via acupuncture needles.
In addition to superior solubility, this technology has been proven to maintain the integrity of active ingredients in turmeric. Laboratory testing showed that curcumin levels and other supporting active compounds were not damaged during the high-temperature processing of the spray dryer. The presence of these compounds is crucial, as they are key determinants of the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving efficacy of the herbal plant.
The safety profile of this newly formulated extract was also tested using zebrafish as animal models. Research results demonstrated a better safety level compared to conventional extracts. At certain doses, test fish exhibited high survival rates and normal motor behavior, although dose limitation remains necessary to prevent toxic effects at excessive concentrations.
The success of this research opens a new chapter in integrating traditional Indonesian medicine with modern medical technology. Although further clinical trials on mammals and humans are still required, this innovation holds great potential to elevate the economic and medical value of turmeric from simple traditional jamu into a safe, practical, world-class phytopharmaceutical product.
