The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has officially announced a temporary closure of the hiking access to Mount Semeru. This decision was made out of respect for the 2026 Karo Festival traditional ceremonies to be conducted by the Tengger indigenous community in Ranupani Village.
According to an official announcement by the Head of the TNBTS Center, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, the hiking trail will be closed for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026. This closure follows a request from the Ranupani Village Government to preserve the sacredness of the annual ritual.
Although hiking activities to the peak are suspended, national park management ensures that tourist visits to Ranu Regulo will remain open as normal. This policy is expected to provide convenience for tourists while ensuring the smooth execution of the ritual for the local community.
For hikers who already have a scheduled departure or were previously affected by schedule adjustments due to the 2025 eruption but overlap with this closure period, the management provides a rescheduling facility. Procedures regarding the schedule change mechanism will be communicated further to the group leaders via the official contacts registered in the booking system.
The National Park Authority urges all outdoor enthusiasts and tourism service providers to comply with these regulations responsibly. This step is taken to ensure safety, the smooth conduct of the traditional ceremonies, and the comfort of all parties involved in the Mount Semeru region.
