The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (BB TNBTS) has officially announced the temporary suspension of all climbing activities on Mount Semeru. This policy has been implemented to show respect for the Yadnya Karo traditional ceremonies organized by the Tengger indigenous community.
The climbing route of the highest mountain on Java Island will be closed for 12 days, from Friday, August 7, 2026, to Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The Head of BB TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that this decision was based on an official request from the Ranupani Village Government to ensure that the ancestral rituals proceed solemnly and orderly.
Climbers are required to descend from the route and arrive at the Ranupani post no later than Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB. For climbers whose visit schedules are affected by this policy, the management is providing a rescheduling facility, the details of which will be communicated directly to the group leaders.
Although climbing to the summit of Semeru is suspended, BB TNBTS emphasized that daily tourist access and the camping area in Ranu Regulo remain open to the public. The authorities hope that all tourists can understand this policy to preserve the local culture and the sanctity of the traditional rituals.
The Mount Semeru climbing route is scheduled to reopen normally on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Prospective climbers are advised to regularly monitor the online registration system on the official website bromotenggersemeru.id for the latest updates.
