The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (BB TNBTS) has officially announced the closure of the climbing routes to Mount Semeru and Ranu Kumbolo. This policy will be implemented from August 7 to August 18, 2026.
This closure is a gesture of deep respect for the Hari Raya Karo celebration, a sacred customary tradition of the Tengger Tribe in Ranupani Village that takes place annually. This step was taken to maintain the solemnity of the cultural ritual while preserving local customs.
The park management has set a deadline for climbers. All visitors must be at the Ranupani Post and leave the climbing area by Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB at the latest. During the closure period, climbing activities in the area will be completely suspended.
The climbing routes are scheduled to reopen to the public on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. For climbers who already have bookings during this period, BB TNBTS provides a rescheduling mechanism for those affected, including climbers who previously failed to make the climb due to eruption constraints in 2025.
Although the main climbing routes are closed, BB TNBTS emphasized that the Ranu Regulo tourist area and its camping grounds will remain open as usual. This serves as an alternative for tourists wishing to enjoy the natural atmosphere of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area while the traditional ritual takes place.
