A spirit of togetherness and high nationalism enveloped the opening of the Indonesian American Games (IAG) 2026 in the United States. This largest sports and arts-culture event for the Indonesian diaspora is designed to strengthen intergenerational relationships and introduce the rich culture of the Archipelago on the international stage.
Taking place over three days, the IAG 2026 event combines competitive sports competitions with various traditional arts performances. The event serves as a warm space for interaction among Indonesian citizens from various regions and professions across the US.
The initiator of IAG 2026, Davon Arjunaidi, explained that the initial idea of this event was actually very simple: to bring the diaspora together through sports. However, over time, the event grew into a massive movement strengthening Indonesia's national identity abroad. According to Davon, IAG is not merely a medal-hunting event, but a platform for fellowship to foster pride in the homeland.
Deep appreciation also came from the Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), Raja Sapta Oktohari. He assessed that IAG 2026 successfully implemented noble Olympic values, such as friendship, sportsmanship, and mutual respect. According to him, this activity proves that sports have a universal power to unite people and shape positive character in the diaspora's younger generation.
Echoing these sentiments, the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, emphasized the importance of this event as a means of non-formal diplomacy. He stated that IAG 2026 represents a peaceful, inclusive, and high-achieving face of Indonesia, while strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and the United States through a socio-cultural approach.
