The high safety risks of Mount Everest expeditions are now being addressed through modern drone technology. For the 2026 climbing season, mapping of the hazardous Khumbu Icefall area was successfully conducted with precision using a combination of high-tech drone units and three-dimensional (3D) modeling. This step marks a major turning point in reducing accidents on one of the world's most treacherous climbing routes.
Traditionally, mapping the route between Base Camp at 5,364 meters and Camp 1 at 6,500 meters relied entirely on the bravery of the Sherpa team, known as the "Icefall Doctors." They had to explore manually on foot to fix safety ropes and ladders across constantly moving ice crevasses. This conventional method often exposed local guides to the direct threat of giant ice collapses (seracs) and unpredictable deep crevasses.
Through a collaboration with Nepalese company Airlift Technology, DJI Matrice 4E drone units were deployed to conduct automated aerial scans at altitudes exceeding 6,000 meters in extreme temperatures reaching below -20 degrees Celsius. Using a five-way imaging system, this advanced device managed to map a three-square-kilometer ice area in just 3.5 hours. The visual data captured was then processed by DJI Terra software using 3D Gaussian Splatting methods to create high-precision, centimeter-scale digital 3D maps.
This digital innovation proved crucial when a massive ice collapse blocked the climbing route during the 2026 season, temporarily trapping hundreds of climbers at Base Camp. Thanks to the analysis of the latest 3D models, ice experts were able to monitor glacier movement and plan safe alternative corridors within hours—a process that previously took weeks and risked lives.
Airlift Technology CEO, Raj Bikram Maharjan, emphasized that this project is the first real-scale operational implementation of drones in Nepal's extreme climate region. Beyond revolutionizing climbing safety standards, this high-precision visual data archive also serves as a valuable reference for environmental researchers monitoring the long-term impact of global warming on the thinning of Everest's glaciers.
