The Klaten Regency Government is taking a step further in addressing waste management issues by integrating waste-to-energy technology. This project is part of a national initiative establishing Klaten as one of 20 pilot regions for an environmental governance program supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Regent of Klaten, Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, emphasized that waste management cannot rely solely on downstream measures; it must be addressed comprehensively from upstream to downstream. At the upstream level, the Klaten Regency Government has issued a Regent's Circular requiring households to sort waste independently at home as an initial step to reduce the volume of waste entering the Final Disposal Site (TPA).
Meanwhile, at the midstream level, the local government is revitalizing inactive Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Processing Sites (TPS3R). This measure is supported by a commitment to add new TPS3R units annually to accelerate localized waste processing.
On the downstream side, the Klaten Regency Government has inaugurated the operation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) at the Troketon Landfill in Pedan District, designed to reduce odors and purify leachate generated from accumulated waste. This innovation ensures that liquid waste discharge complies with environmental quality standards established by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
Head of the Klaten Environmental Office (DLH), Srihadi, added that his agency has prepared a 6.6-hectare land area to support the waste-to-energy processing plant facility. The location is considered strategic due to its proximity to a PLN electrical substation and a river water source necessary for the technology's operation.
The project, projected to be operational by early 2028, is planned to initiate the memorandum of understanding (MoU) stage in the near future. It is hoped that this technology will address the challenging increase in waste volume in Klaten Regency, which currently reaches around 170 tons per day.
