The fast sea transportation service connecting Banyuwangi and Denpasar operated by Express Bahari officially ceased operations as of Thursday (7/2/2026). This decision was taken even though the boat service was just inaugurated on July 23, 2025.
Head of the Banyuwangi Regional Feeder Port UPT, Yohanes Heri Kriswirawan, stated that this suspension was an internal decision by the company. Given its status as a private operator without government subsidies, the company has full flexibility to evaluate the business viability of the route.
From an operational standpoint, Head of the Denpasar City Transportation Agency, I Ketut Sriawan, explained that passenger numbers failed to reach expected targets. Data indicated significant fluctuations in passenger figures, where occupancy rates could not consistently sustain operational viability, even during peak periods such as the Eid holidays.
One of the main obstacles is the preference of local residents in Banyuwangi and Jember, who favor using private vehicles when traveling to Bali. Using private vehicles is considered more essential for mobility and visiting family upon arrival at the destination, making the fast boat service less of a primary choice for tourists and domestic travelers alike.
In addition to market and economic factors, ocean current conditions along the Banyuwangi-Denpasar route were also a technical consideration for the operators. Currently, relevant officials state that the service suspension is temporary, while a deep evaluation is conducted regarding potential route adjustments to better meet future market demands.
