A misleading narrative is currently being widely discussed on social media, linking the emergence of Hantavirus to a covert global elite agenda. The post falsely cites Police Commissioner General (Ret.) Dr. Dharma Pongrekun, M.M., attaching labels such as biochemist and geopolitical observer to bolster the claim that the virus is spread solely for business interests.
Fact-checking results show that the narrative is a hoax. In addition to lacking a scientific background relevant to the claims made, the statement also contradicts medical data regarding the characteristics of Hantavirus. The virus was actually identified in 1976 in South Korea, specifically around the Hantan River, following a mysterious outbreak affecting UN troops between 1951 and 1953.
Unlike the spread pattern of other respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, Hantavirus is transmitted to humans through exposure to dust contaminated with the feces, urine, or saliva of infected rodents. Human-to-human transmission of this disease is recorded as extremely rare. Thus, theories regarding biochemical engineering as a tool for global control lack a solid scientific foundation.
Data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia confirms that Hantavirus cases in Indonesia are rare, with the majority of findings being the Seoul Virus variant. From January 2024 to May 2026, a total of 23 confirmed cases were recorded across nine provinces, with the highest prevalence in DKI Jakarta and Yogyakarta. The public is advised to remain calm and always refer to information from official health authorities.
