Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, emphasized that resolving the prolonged conflict in Papua can no longer be achieved through a piecemeal approach. According to him, courage is needed to make political decisions at the national level involving all elements of the nation to address the true root of the problem.
This statement came in response to data from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) recording a surge in violence in Papua. Throughout 2025, 97 armed conflict events were recorded, with an additional 26 new cases up to April 2026. Pigai highlighted that the intensity of violence resulting in casualties across regions such as Dogiyai, Yahukimo, and Tembagapura has drawn international attention.
Pigai criticized the handling pattern previously employed by the government and relevant institutions, which tended to focus solely on resolving cases on an individual basis. He considers this method ineffective in curbing the escalation of conflict, whose impact is now spreading rapidly due to open access to information and technology.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of synergy between executive, legislative, and judicial branches of power, as well as the active participation of political parties and national figures. For him, this collective step is crucial to prevent negative global perceptions of Indonesia's human rights commitments, while offering a permanent solution for stability in Papua.
