Meta Platforms Inc. has officially taken a strategic step in its wearable device business model by introducing a paid service called Meta One Premium. This policy targets Meta smart glasses users, who must now pay if they want to enjoy artificial intelligence (AI)-based features more freely.

One of the affected features is Conversational Focus. Previously freely accessible, this feature is now limited to just three hours per month for free users. To gain unlimited access and various other premium AI features, users are required to subscribe at a cost of US$20 per month, equivalent to Rp361,000.

Conversational Focus itself is an AI capability that allows smart glasses to continuously understand conversation context. With this feature, the device can provide relevant answers to follow-up questions without requiring users to repeat the context explanation from the beginning. This move is seen as Meta's effort to monetize the advanced AI technology they have developed.

The implementation of this subscription scheme comes shortly after the company launched its latest line of smart glasses starting at US$299. Meta's decision to shift to a subscription-based business model is a strong signal that the company is seeking ways to create new revenue streams amid the massive expansion of its smart glasses product line in the global market.
