BALIKPAPAN - Commemorating the 79th Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Day (HMKG), the BMKG Balikpapan Geophysics Station reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening disaster mitigation systems. This step is being realized through the development of earthquake Early Warning System (EWS) technology, an early warning system designed to automatically stop the operations of vital objects before damaging shocks hit.
Head of the BMKG Balikpapan Geophysics Station, Rasmid, revealed that this innovative system works by detecting initial seismic waves. The delay of a few seconds before the arrival of the damaging secondary waves will be used to shut off power lines, stop gas networks, and halt oil refinery operations to minimize the risk of severe fires or hazardous material leaks.
Currently, the earthquake EWS is still in the testing phase in a number of strategic areas in Java and Sumatra. Balikpapan itself is confirmed to be on the priority list for implementing this technology due to its status as a region with highly crucial national vital objects, particularly the presence of the largest oil refinery complex in Kalimantan.
In addition to focusing on earthquake early warnings, BMKG Balikpapan also plays an important role in mapping geological feasibility for infrastructure projects in East Kalimantan. Tectonic activity data and active fault mapping provided by BMKG serve as key references for the construction of toll roads, bridges, and various supporting facilities in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) area to ensure long-term safety.
Complementing physical safety efforts, BMKG consistently supports local food and economic security through integrated weather services and educational programs. Programs such as the Climate Field School for farmers and the Fishermen's Field School continue to be rolled out so that the community can adapt to weather changes while increasing preparedness for potential natural disasters.
