An act of violence has targeted medical personnel in Timika, Central Papua. An ambulance belonging to the Mapurujaya Community Health Center (Puskesmas) was pelted with stones by a group of people suspected to be under the influence of alcohol in the Kilometer 9 area, right in front of the Hidayatullah Mosque, on Sunday morning (2/8/2026) at around 06:29 WIT. As a result of this attack, a 25-year-old midwife named Asriani suffered a laceration to her head.
The victim, who had just finished her night shift, was immediately rushed to the Mimika Regional General Hospital (RSUD) for intensive medical treatment. Asriani reportedly had to receive two stitches for a wound behind her ear. To date, the victim is still under observation in the Emergency Room (ER) due to complaints of severe dizziness and blurred vision following the incident.
The Head of the Mapurujaya Health Center, Ona Bunga, explained that the tragic incident occurred while the group of healthcare workers was on their way home in an ambulance with license plate number PA 5099 MB. Suddenly, a group of people threw large stones at the operational medical vehicle, shattering the glass and injuring the victim.
The health center management has reported the incident to the East Mimika Police for immediate legal follow-up. Ona hopes that law enforcement agencies will act quickly to apprehend the perpetrators to deter others and ensure the safety of medical workers who risk their lives to serve the community.
