PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore Southeast Sumatra (PHE OSES) has made history in the national upstream oil and gas industry by implementing Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) technology in the Rama Field. This strategic move marks the first milestone in the use of the CEOR method in Indonesia's offshore sector, aiming to maximize oil recovery from fields that have entered a mature phase.
The CEOR method works by injecting a polymer solution into the oil reservoir. This innovation serves to increase the sweep efficiency for remaining oil trapped within reservoir rocks toward production wells. With this approach, extraction efficiency can be significantly enhanced while extending the productive life of assets previously considered past their prime.
President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, emphasized that managing mature assets requires a paradigm shift through the integration of cutting-edge technology. According to him, this innovation proves that legacy fields still play a vital role in supporting national energy security without having to rely solely on new reserve discoveries.
Head of SKK Migas, Djoko Siswanto, welcomed this initiative as a crucial technological breakthrough. The successful implementation in the Rama Field is expected to serve as a benchmark for similar projects in other offshore working areas, thereby making a tangible contribution to national oil lifting targets.
Prior to its official launch, the project underwent a series of rigorous technical verification processes, ranging from subsurface studies to risk management analysis. PHE OSES targets full optimization of this technology's implementation by 2030, while establishing the Rama Field as a pilot project for future CEOR technology development in Indonesia.
