The Asahan Regency Government, together with the Military District Command (Kodim) 0208/Asahan, officially opened the 81st Independence Football Tournament at the Mutiara Kisaran Stadium on Monday (27/7/2026). The competition, which vies for the Dandim 0208/Asahan Cup, is held to welcome the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia while strengthening relations among agencies in the region.
A total of 15 teams representing various government agencies, professional organizations, higher education institutions, and village apparatuses took part in this event. The Organizing Committee Chairman, Ali Ibra Manurung, explained that all participants are divided into four groups. This football competition is scheduled to run for approximately two weeks, applying a group stage system to filter the best teams into the knockout phase.
Commander of Kodim 0208/Asahan, Lieutenant Colonel Inf. Edy Syahputra, emphasized that this championship is not merely about competing for the title. According to him, the tournament serves as a platform for nurturing potential local football athletes who are expected to bring honor to the region on a higher stage. He also urged all match officials, especially referees, to lead every match fairly and professionally.
The Regent of Asahan, Taufik Zainal Abidin, also expressed his appreciation for the organization of this sporting event as a bond of unity for the community. In his speech, Taufik revealed the local government's commitment to continuing to support the football ecosystem from an early age. Following this event, the local government plans to initiate the Asahan Regent Cup Tournament targeting the 12 to 15 age groups.
The inauguration of the tournament was marked by a symbolic kick-off by elements of the Asahan Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda). The opening ceremony was then enlivened by an exhibition match between the Asahan Forkopimda team and FC Anak Harimau, reflecting solid synergy and camaraderie among local stakeholders.
