Siloam Hospitals Surabaya has just completed a free cataract surgery social service program which took place from July 11 to 12, 2026. This initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between the hospital, the Catholic Professionals and Entrepreneurs (PUKAT), and the Rotary Club, aiming to facilitate underprivileged communities in gaining access to quality eye health care.
Before the medical procedure was performed, the process began with a strict screening phase held on June 27, 2026. Out of a total of 273 registered participants, the medical team selected 86 patients who met the medical criteria to undergo free cataract surgery.
The Director of Siloam Hospitals Surabaya, dr. Maria Magdalena Padmidewi, stated that this program covers comprehensive services ranging from initial examinations and surgical procedures to post-operative monitoring. The entire procedure involved a team of experienced ophthalmologists to ensure that safety standards and patient comfort were maintained throughout the recovery process.
Furthermore, dr. Maria emphasized that vision health is a fundamental element in supporting quality of life. She hopes this social action can reduce the rate of vision impairment caused by cataracts in Surabaya, while offering new hope for patients to live their daily lives more productively and independently.
Echoing this sentiment, PUKAT representative Lie Leonardo Gunawan stated that this cross-sector synergy is a key factor in expanding the reach of healthcare services. According to him, restoring vision through this surgery is not only beneficial from a medical standpoint but also serves as an important instrument to restore the self-confidence and independence of people whose lives have been hindered by cataract disorders.
