A strategic collaboration between Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and IPB University has successfully created an innovative portable fish aggregating device (FAD) specifically designed to improve the welfare of fishermen in Kabetan Village, Toli-Toli Regency, Central Sulawesi. This technology was developed as a solution to the limitations of traditional fishing gear, which previously restricted fishermen to shallow waters catching low-economic-value fish species.

This innovative portable FAD is equipped with a sound attractor system capable of luring pelagic fish to aggregate. Operating effectively at depths of up to 30 meters, the device's design prioritizes ease of operation, assembly, and maintenance by local fishermen, ensuring its long-term sustainable use in the future.

During the implementation in June 2026, the community service team handed over six units of portable FADs, dozens of gillnet sets, and handline fishing gear. Beyond physical equipment, fishermen received in-depth technical training on installation and maintenance procedures to enable them to independently adapt and utilize this environmentally friendly technology.

The head of the community service team, Dr. Ir. Sri Raharno, emphasized that the main focus of this activity is community empowerment. Through intensive mentoring, it is hoped that this technology will serve as a tangible solution that increases both the volume and diversity of the fishermen's catch compared to before.

In addition to providing fishing equipment, the team also supplied five units of solar-powered streetlights to assist with daily activities and improve safety for residents in coastal areas with limited access to electricity. In the future, this empowerment and technology model is projected to be replicated in various other coastal regions across Indonesia with similar geographical characteristics.
