Secretary General of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Raja Juli Antoni, stressed that Jakarta's current status as the national capital does not negatively impact the construction progress of Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan. According to him, this transition is proceeding as planned, targeting IKN to be established as the national political government center by 2028.
This assertion is supported by legal certainty contained in the Constitutional Court (MK) Decision Number 38/PUU-XXIV/2026. This ruling states that Jakarta retains its capital status until a Presidential Decree (Keppres) regarding the official relocation is issued. This authority rests entirely with the government, which will consider national readiness and sustainable governance.
On the other hand, concerns have arisen from lawmakers regarding the effectiveness of budget utilization. Member of Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Komarudin Watubun, highlighted the high cost of asset maintenance in IKN, which continues even though the city is not yet fully functioning as a capital. He warned that financing the upkeep of massive building facilities could burden state finances if their use is not promptly optimized.
As a solution, Komarudin proposed that the government take concrete steps, such as assigning Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to work from IKN. This move is seen as capable of adding value to the facilities built with a massive budget while ensuring that operational funds spent are not wasted before the official capital transition occurs.
