Microsoft has officially entered into a strategic partnership with global technology and manufacturing company 3M. Through this collaboration, Microsoft is recorded as the first hyperscale cloud service provider to adopt 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology into its Azure data center infrastructure to support increasingly massive artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.
The deployment of this EBO technology is designed to speed up the installation process of fiber optic connections while providing greater protection against environmental contamination such as dust. These characteristics are crucial for the operational sustainability of AI data centers that require high scalability, stable connectivity, and long-term infrastructure reliability.
On the other hand, this collaboration also brings benefits to 3M. The company will leverage Microsoft's AI solutions to accelerate its internal operational transformation, particularly in optimizing efficiency within its customer service and finance sectors.
The synergy between the two tech giants was immediately met with a positive market response, marked by a 2.6 percent increase in 3M's stock price shortly after the announcement. 3M is scheduled to release its second-quarter financial report on July 21, with an estimated net profit growth of 5.1 percent or equivalent to USD 2.27 per share from a revenue target of USD 6.38 billion.
