Jakarta is currently undergoing a strategic transformation to establish its position not just as a business hub, but as a premier sports tourism destination on the international stage. This initiative by the Jakarta Provincial Government aims to blend the hosting of sporting events with the strengths of the local tourism, culinary, and arts and culture sectors.

Head of the Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency (Dispora), Andri Yansyah, explained that this concept is designed to create a domino effect for the regional economy. The presence of athletes, officials, and supporters from various countries is expected to significantly drive the hospitality, transportation, and local MSME sectors.

Jakarta's main asset in realizing this vision lies in the availability of world-standard sports infrastructure, such as the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) and Gelora Bung Karno (GBK). These facilities are integrated with adequate public transport modes, providing easy access for tourists looking to explore city landmarks such as the Kota Tua area, Ancol, and the Thousand Islands.

Tourism expert from Airlangga University, Novianto Edi Suharno, assessed that this step is very appropriate. Given the limitations in natural resources compared to other regions, focusing on man-made sports-based tourism is a smart strategy. Tourists interested in this segment tend to have longer stays and higher purchasing power, optimizing economic circulation in the downstream sector.

To maintain this momentum, the Jakarta Provincial Government has designed a dense annual calendar of events, ranging from student competitions to prestigious international events. All these efforts are prepared as part of a strategic series welcoming Jakarta's 500th anniversary celebration in 2027.
