Universitas Brawijaya Deploys 1,000 MMD Students, Targeting 100 Appropriate Technology Innovations Across 76 Villages

Universitas Brawijaya has dispatched 1,000 students for the MMD program in East Java to deliver 100 appropriate technology innovations that provide solutions for rural communities.

Universitas Brawijaya (UB) officially dispatched 1,000 student participants for the 2026 edition of the Students Building Villages (Mahasiswa Membangun Desa / MMD) program on Monday (July 6, 2026). For a full month, students from 15 faculties will carry out community service in 76 villages spread across eight regencies in East Java.

The program, which runs until August 6, 2026, involves 38 Field Supervisor Lecturers (DPL) to guide the students across 32 sub-districts. The program's coverage area includes Malang, Blitar, Kediri, Lamongan, Trenggalek, Ngawi, Bojonegoro, and Banyuwangi regencies.

UB Rector, Widodo, emphasized that the students' presence in the field is not merely an academic obligation, but a mission to collaborate with local villagers. He advised the students to position themselves as strategic partners who uphold local wisdom, rather than adopting a patronizing attitude when formulating solutions to residents' problems.

The primary target of this year's program is the creation of more than 100 Appropriate Technology (TTG) innovations tailored to the real needs of local communities. In addition to physical innovations, UB is also aiming for academic achievements in the form of publishing 38 scientific articles and securing over 500 media coverages to disseminate the results of their community service.

Director of UB's Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), Lukman Hakim, revealed that the program's success is supported by cross-sector partnerships. Collaborations have been established with various entities, including government agencies, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and the business sector, such as Bappenas, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, and Bank Jatim.

Concrete support for the villages includes the distribution of plant seeds, thousands of fish fingerlings, and book donations via the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. This year's MMD program is also designed to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets, encompassing poverty alleviation, literacy improvement, and the strengthening of MSMEs in remote rural areas.
