Welcoming the transformation of higher education towards 2026, the Rector of Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Surabaya, Dr. Harjo Seputro, emphasized the importance of maintaining an ethical foundation amidst the tide of digitalization. In a reflection following a visit to the Sunan Gunung Jati area in Cirebon, he stressed that technological progress and artificial intelligence must always be accompanied by moral integrity.
Harjo believes that the challenges of the disruption era cannot be solved solely through technical strategies. According to him, the legacy of Sunan Gunung Jati's thoughts on service and education-based civilization building is highly relevant for adoption by the academic community. Higher education institutions are required not merely to produce intellectually proficient graduates, but also those with sensitivity toward social reality.
Citing the historical advice, "Ingsun titip tajug lan fakir miskin", Harjo stated that the campus must function as a house of knowledge that remains aligned with humanity. The implementation of this value is reflected in transparent, accountable university governance, as well as strengthening student character with deep empathy for the broader community.
Furthermore, the Rector of Untag Surabaya stated that openness to international collaboration and technological advances must not erode national identity. On the contrary, global progress should serve as a means to strengthen nationalism. Harjo hopes that Untag Surabaya will continue to be a dynamic harbor of knowledge while remaining deeply rooted in the values of patriotism and the public good.
