The national political landscape ahead of the 2029 Presidential Election (Pilpres) is starting to heat up with the emergence of a new political force. The People's Movement Party, which previously operated as a mass organization (ormas), has now officially transformed into a political party and is openly targeting the former Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, as the main figure to be nominated.
This strategic move was emphasized by the General Chairperson of the People's Movement Party, Sahrin Hamid, during the party's National Working Meeting (Rakernas). The party holds high hopes that Anies will agree to become the driving force as well as the presidential candidate for this new party in the upcoming five-yearly political contest.
Responding to this discourse, Anies Baswedan has not yet issued an official statement regarding the potential cooperation. On various previous occasions, the former 2024 presidential candidate emphasized that discussions regarding the 2029 Presidential Election are still too early to address, considering that the public's focus should currently be on various more urgent national development agendas.
Despite having a relatively solid base of supporters post-2024 election, Anies' path with this new party is predicted to be challenging. As a newcomer political party, the People's Movement Party must first pass strict factual verification stages, build organizational structures down to the regional level, and formulate a coalition strategy to meet the presidential threshold.
Political observers assess that the presence of the People's Movement Party could provide a new alternative in the Indonesian political landscape. However, the success of this discourse heavily depends on the effectiveness of the party's internal consolidation over the next few years and the national political dynamics, which remain highly fluid ahead of the election year.
