The Sorong City Health Office has taken decisive action by temporarily freezing the authorization to accept new patients at Maleo Hospital (RS Maleo) for two weeks. This policy follows an investigative audit regarding alleged medical negligence and delays in treatment that led to the death of a three-year-old toddler.

Head of the Sorong City Health Office, Jemima Elisabeth Lobat, explained that this administrative sanction aims to provide space for comprehensive guidance. During the suspension period, authorities will evaluate and strengthen hospital management, standard operating procedures (SOPs), human resource capacity, and clinical service systems.

Nevertheless, Jemima assured that current inpatients at Maleo Hospital will continue to receive medical care until they are declared recovered. The restriction applies specifically to new patient registrations to ensure a smooth internal evaluation process.

The case began when a toddler with the initials ZA received treatment at Maleo Hospital on July 16, before being referred to Wanane Regional General Hospital (RSJP Wanane) in Sorong Regency the following day. After undergoing intensive care for five days at the referral hospital, the child passed away.

Based on the findings of the investigative audit team operating from July 15–18, several crucial points were identified that must be immediately addressed by Maleo Hospital management. Key evaluation points include strengthening coordination among medical staff, adherence to service SOPs, improving medical record administration, and optimizing patient referral systems.

Jemima emphasized that the investigative audit focuses on improving the quality of the healthcare service system in Sorong City, rather than determining legal status or personal fault. The local government stated it respects any ongoing legal processes and is fully committed to using this incident as a momentum for a comprehensive evaluation for patient safety.
