Ternate's Domination at POPDA XII North Maluku 2026: Proof of Success in Youth Athlete Development

Ternate City successfully claimed the overall championship title at the 2026 North Maluku POPDA XII, reinforcing the region's status as a hub for high-performing athletes through a sustainable development system.

Ternate City once again demonstrated its prowess in the regional sports arena by declaring itself overall champion at the XII North Maluku Regional Student Sports Week (POPDA) 2026. The competition, held in Morotai Island Regency, officially concluded on Saturday (11/7/2026), with Ternate securing its position at the top of the medal tally.

The Ternate City contingent dominated the events, collecting a total of 52 medals comprising 30 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals. This achievement outperformed contingents from other regions, such as North Halmahera Regency with 44 medals, Tidore Islands City with 32 medals, followed by South Halmahera Regency and Morotai Island.

Regional Secretary of Ternate City, Dr. H. Rizal Marsaoly, S.E., M.M., emphasized that this achievement reflects an effective sports development ecosystem. According to him, this success is the result of cross-sectoral synergy involving the local government, coaches, schools, as well as moral support from the athletes' parents.

"This achievement is not just a number, but proof that Ternate City is a city of athletes with a long tradition of success. Having previously won the overall championship at the North Halmahera Porprov, this POPDA achievement further strengthens our identity as a hub for young talent development in North Maluku," Rizal stated in his remarks.

Furthermore, the Ternate City Government is committed to continuously improving the quality of sports development through the Ternate City KONI. It also encourages educational institutions to give equal appreciation to students excelling in sports, just like academic achievements. As a form of recognition, the Mayor of Ternate is scheduled to personally welcome the returning contingent in appreciation of their dedication to bringing honor to the city.

Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of North Maluku Province, Drs. H. Samsuddin A. Kadir, M.Si., during the closing ceremony emphasized that POPDA is a vital medium for scouting future talent. The event is expected to produce elite athletes who will eventually be projected to represent North Maluku in various national-level championships.
