A group of nature-loving students from Syiah Kuala University (USK) belonging to the student activity unit UKM PA Leuser successfully completed an exploratory expedition on Mount Geureudong, Bener Meriah Regency. Taking place over five days from July 4 to 8, 2026, the expedition focused on mapping a new hiking trail through Gemasih Village, Pintu Rime Gayo District.
The mission, led by six team members—Lamon, M. Rafly, Zarul Azham, Iqbal Hakim, Teuku Radja Imrad, and Telaga Kombat—aimed to showcase the potential of adventure tourism while campaigning for the importance of preserving forest ecosystems. General Chairperson of UKM PA Leuser USK, M. Rafly, emphasized that this mapping is crucial so future climbers have a safe and environmentally friendly route guide.
During their journey through the wilderness, the team faced challenging terrain contours, ranging from dense tropical rainforest vegetation to the unique moss forest ecosystem near the summit area. In addition to testing physical endurance, the expedition members recorded navigation data, documented biodiversity, and assessed the trail's feasibility for future climbing safety.
This initiative was warmly welcomed by the local government. The Geuchik (village head) of Gemasih Village expressed his support, hoping that opening official climbing access will stimulate the local economy through the ecotourism sector. However, he reminded prospective climbers to always respect local customs, maintain cleanliness, and abide by village regulations.
Following the success of this expedition, UKM PA Leuser USK remains committed to maintaining close collaboration with local residents and village officials. This synergy is expected to create sustainable, conservation-based management of natural tourism destinations in the Mount Geureudong area.
