The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recorded a significant increase in volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. From June 2 to July 11, 2026, the volcano located in the South Lampung Regency area has erupted 19 times.
Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, Suwarno, explained that the volcano's status is currently still at Level III or Alert (Siaga). His team continues to conduct intensive observations through visual monitoring and instrumental monitoring 24 hours a day to anticipate fluctuating geological dynamics.
Monitoring equipment recordings show that seismic activity and emissions are still ongoing. This condition is the basis for the Geological Agency's decision to raise the volcano's status from Level II (Watch/Waspada) to Level III (Alert/Siaga) since early July. Nevertheless, authorities ensure that the current situation is still under control and constantly monitored with the implementation of strict disaster mitigation protocols.
Regarding safety, PVMBG issued a firm appeal to the public, tourists, and fishermen not to engage in activities within a two-kilometer radius of the main crater. This step is crucial to avoid the risk of volcanic material ejecta or other eruption impacts that could occur at any time.
In addition to the exclusion zone, fishermen operating around the waters of the Sunda Strait are asked to constantly update their information regarding the volcano and weather conditions before sailing. The public is also urged to remain calm and only refer to official information released by authorized agencies to counter the spread of hoaxes or misinformation.
