Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, showed a significant increase in volcanic activity throughout Sunday (12/7/2026). A total of eight eruptions were recorded, with the highest ash column reaching 900 meters above the mountain's peak.
An officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, Liswanto, revealed that the series of eruptions began at 05:50 WIB with an ash column height of 600 meters. The intensity of the eruptions continued periodically, peaking at the eighth eruption at 19:00 WIB, which spewed white to gray ash to the north.
Currently, the status of Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert). The public is urged to comply with the exclusion zone set by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), which is not to approach the crater within a five-kilometer radius.
Additionally, residents are asked to stay away from the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the eruption center. The public is also required to remain vigilant against the threat of hot clouds, lava flows, and lahar flows that could potentially occur along the river channels originating at the mountain's peak, such as Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat.
