The volcanic activity of Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, showed a significant increase after recording six eruptions throughout Friday, July 10, 2026. Based on monitoring by relevant authorities, the highest eruption was recorded reaching 1.3 kilometers above the crater peak.
Mount Semeru Observation Post officer, Liswanto, reported that the series of eruptions began at 06:29 WIB with an ash column 1.1 kilometers high heading southwest. The intensity of volcanic activity continued until the peak eruption reached a height of 1.3 kilometers at 07:39 WIB, followed by four subsequent eruptions with ash column heights ranging from 500 meters to 1.2 kilometers.
As of now, Mount Semeru's status remains at Level III (Alert). Volcano monitoring officials emphasized a strict ban on residents conducting activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, specifically within a 13-kilometer radius from the eruption center. In addition, the public is urged to stay at least 500 meters away from riverbanks along streams originating from the mountain to anticipate potential pyroclastic flows and cold lava floods.
Besides the threat of pyroclastic flows, local authorities also warned of the risk of incandescent rock ejection for anyone venturing within a five-kilometer radius of the crater. Residents are advised to continuously monitor official information updates and remain vigilant regarding river flows such as Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, which are at risk of being affected by volcanic material falls.
