Responding to public concern over a mugging incident targeting a university student, the Tarakan Resort Police (Polres) teamed up with several local indigenous mass organizations (ormas) to tighten security on the Gunung Selatan route. This collaborative patrol was held on Thursday night (23/7/2026) to restore a sense of safety for residents, especially night commuters.
This action was triggered by an alleged violent robbery accompanied by a stabbing in the area the previous day. Through this preventive measure, security forces and community elements aim to ensure the vital corridor connecting the city area to Juata remains peaceful and free from criminal threats.
Chairman of Laskar Borneo Bersatu (LBB) Tarakan, Ricky Febriansyah, stated that this synergy is a concrete form of civic concern for public order and security. He also urged the local government to immediately address the lack of public street lighting in vulnerable spots of Gunung Selatan, which criminals often exploit to carry out their actions.
"We hope for concrete action regarding street lighting in this dark area so that there is no loophole for criminals. We urge the general public to remain calm but increase vigilance. Do not hesitate to coordinate with the authorities if you see suspicious behavior," Ricky said during the patrol.
This community-led security movement is supported by a coalition of local indigenous organizations, including Laskar Pemuda Adat Dayak Kalimantan (LPADKT), Tameng Adat Borneo, Pusaka, Aliansi Serumpun, Yayasan Lembaga Budaya Dayak Tidung Bersatu, Gepak, Jubah Hitam, Pasukan Merah Nusantara, and Perpedayak.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Tarakan City LPADKT Branch (DPC), Carles, emphasized the importance of self-precaution for road users. He advised the public to avoid riding alone at night in the quiet area as much as possible, and to always be ready to use the Indonesian National Police's Call Center 110 in emergencies.
