The Tangerang Regency Government is committed to transforming the conventional waste management system into one based on eco-friendly technology. This step is taken to address the accumulating waste issue and suppress the impact of air pollution caused by illegal waste burning in the region.
Vice Regent of Tangerang, Intan Nurul Hikmah, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, communities, and private developers in handling this issue. She stated this during a waste management discussion forum with regional officials and developers of the Lavon Swan City area in Sindang Jaya District.
On that occasion, Intan encouraged large-scale residential developers in Tangerang, such as Lavon, Suvarna Sutera, Paramount, Summarecon, Sinar Mas, and Ciputra, to have independent waste management systems. Thus, the volume of waste from housing estates can be resolved directly at the source without burdening the final disposal site (TPA).
The local government is currently assessing several alternative modern waste processing technologies, ranging from pyrolysis for fuel oil conversion, Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) production, to waste-to-energy (WTE) technology. In addition, the Tangerang Regency Government is also preparing a special zone projected to be an integrated modern waste management center.
On the other hand, firm action is also being prepared against perpetrators of illegal waste burning, which often triggers resident complaints and potential forest fires during the dry season. The Tangerang Regency Government has instructed sub-district heads to coordinate with police officers for law enforcement to create a deterrent effect, while continuing to educate the public about changing mindsets in managing domestic waste.
