Volcanic activity of Mount Karangetang on Siau Island, Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, has once again shown a significant increase. The mountain, which is currently at Level III (Alert) status, reportedly erupted on Sunday (12/7/2026) night at around 19:30 WITA.
Incandescent lava flows emitted from the peak crater were clearly visible to residents living near the settlements, raising concern among the local population. Although the situation initially caused panic, authorities have not received any reports of casualties or infrastructure damage resulting from the natural phenomenon to date.
Acting Regent of Sitaro, Heronimus Makainas, emphasized that public safety remains the top priority for the local government in handling this situation. He urged residents not to be provoked by unverified information and to rely solely on official references from the PVMBG, BPBD, and the regency government as their primary guide for action.
Furthermore, Heronimus firmly requested residents to stay away from the danger zone and refrain from activities in areas designated as disaster-prone zones. The local government has instructed all regional agencies, from sub-district to village levels, to collaborate with the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) and Polri (National Police) to strengthen coordination and ground surveillance.
Currently, the Sitaro Regency Government continues to conduct intensive monitoring of the volcanic activity of Mount Karangetang. In addition to operational readiness, the local government also calls on all elements of society to remain vigilant and pray for the stabilization of the mountain's condition and the safety of all residents in the affected area.
