Mount Semeru in East Java has once again shown significant volcanic activity on Friday morning, July 3, 2026. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recorded that the eruption occurred at precisely 07:29 WIB, with a column of volcanic ash rising up to 1,100 meters above the peak, reaching 4,776 meters above sea level.
The volcanic material, observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity, moved toward the south. Based on seismogram data, the eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of two minutes.
To date, Mount Semeru's status remains set at Level III (Alert). Authorities stressed a strict prohibition for the public against conducting any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within a radius of up to 13 kilometers from the eruption center.
Additionally, residents are advised to maintain a safe distance of at least 500 meters from riverbanks along the Besuk Kobokan flow. This measure is taken to anticipate the threat of pyroclastic flows and lahar flows, which could potentially extend up to 17 kilometers from the mountain's peak.
Residents living around rivers originating from Mount Semeru, such as Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, are requested to increase vigilance against the risks of lava falls and lahar flows. The public is also forbidden from approaching the area within a 5-kilometer radius of the main crater to avoid the threat of dangerous incandescent rock ejection.
