The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has officially announced the temporary closure of Mount Semeru hiking trails, scheduled from August 7 to 18, 2026. This policy was adopted out of deep respect for the sacred celebration of Hari Raya Karo, an important tradition for the indigenous community in the area.
The decision is outlined in Announcement Letter Number PG.16/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2026, issued following an official request from the Ranupani Village Government. In accordance with regulations, all hiking activities must cease entirely, with hikers required to leave the mountain area no later than August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB. The hiking trails are expected to resume normal operations on August 19, 2026.
For hikers with departure schedules during this period, TNBTS provides a rescheduling option through coordination with their group leaders. Although the hiking trails are closed, management clarified that the Ranu Regulo tourist area remains open to visitors and camping enthusiasts.
On the other hand, management authorities remain closely attentive to Semeru's volcanic status, which is currently at Level III (Alert). According to recent reports, the 3,676-meter-high mountain continues to exhibit eruptive activity, casting ash columns and posing risks of pyroclastic flows directed toward the southeastern sector.
The public and tourists are strictly prohibited from carrying out activities within a 13-kilometer radius of the summit in the Besuk Kobokan sector, as well as in the hazard zone within a 5-kilometer radius of the crater. TNBTS emphasized that compliance with these rules is an absolute obligation to ensure human safety while preserving the local wisdom that defines the identity of the communities surrounding Mount Semeru.
