The vannamei shrimp pond owned by the Central Java Provincial Government, located in the Wijayakusuma Industrial Estate (KIW), Semarang City, has successfully proven that the fisheries sector remains productive despite being surrounded by manufacturing activities. This success was achieved thanks to the implementation of modern aquaculture technology engineering capable of optimizing water quality and shrimp health in a measurable way.
The Head of the Central Java Marine Affairs and Fisheries Department, Endi Faiz Efendi, revealed that the cultivation in Plot B3 of the Tugu PBI Station uses a closed system. This strategy was chosen to minimize the use of water from outside the industrial area, where the water used must go through a series of strict treatment processes, starting from the use of dolomite, chlorine, to advanced aeration systems. Within 82 days, the harvest is targeted to reach 1.3 tons with a competitive local market standard quality.
On the other hand, Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi emphasized the important role of government fishery centers as superior breeding hubs for the wider community. He urged related department officials to be more proactive in providing technical assistance, ranging from access to quality seeds to harvest marketing strategies, in order to strengthen national food security.
As a long-term strategic step, the Central Java Provincial Government is finalizing plans to revitalize ponds along the North Coast (Pantura), covering an area of up to 72,000 hectares. Collaboration with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has been established to restore the function of unproductive ponds, so that the fisheries sector can become a more significant economic driver for coastal communities.
