The Australian national team's journey in the 2026 World Cup has come to an early end after they were eliminated in a tense penalty shootout against Egypt. A risky tactical decision made by coach Tony Popovic at the end of the match became the main highlight of the defeat.
In the 119th minute, just before extra time ended, Popovic made a crucial decision by bringing on Mathew Ryan to replace Patrick Beach in goal. Previously, Beach had performed impressively throughout the 120 minutes and was a key player in keeping the score tied at 1-1 through normal and extra time.
The decision to bring on Ryan was based on the senior goalkeeper's reputation as a penalty specialist. However, the coaching staff's hopes were not realized on the pitch. Ryan failed to stop a single Egyptian penalty. Out of four opponent takers, he only managed to guess the direction of the ball correctly once, while going the wrong way for the rest.
In the opposing camp, Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir also failed to make any significant saves. However, luck was not on Australia's side as shots from Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington soared over the crossbar, securing the victory for Egypt.
This bitter result also ends Australia's run as the last remaining AFC confederation representative in the competition. With Australia's elimination, there are no longer any Asian continent representatives moving on to the next round of the 2026 World Cup.
